The Taipei times quotes HTC’s own financial executive Cheng Hui-ming at an investor’s conference as saying they will launch “the most important product for HTC this year” at an event on May 6. Cheng wasn’t too forthcoming with details, but it seems like it’s going to be a “Touch” phone—as in one of the HTC Touch models—and be called the “Diamond”. He says that it’s going to be so good, he’s “confident of landing orders from most major carriers,” but warned about possible delays because they haven’t gotten certification for the phone yet. Samsung’s long-linger F700/u940, has been rumored to hit the big V for a while, but Phone Area’s reporting that it’s now locked and cocked in Verizon’s internal InfoManager as the Glyde, though sans date or price. Spec sheet confirms cam’s cut to a paltry 2MP but all the old specs look otherwise intact, but with added goodness of EV-DO, and Verizon’s usual scarlet bag of tricks like VCAST and VZNavigator. While mobile TV cellphones are ten-a-penny in the Far East, the West is pretty much virgin territory for them. Samsung’s P960, however, may have got the ball rolling, a mobile TV phone aimed at European consumers. A sleek gray slider, the P960 supports both European mobile TV standards, DVB-CBMS and OMA-BCAST, and its 2.6-inch QVGA TFT screen even lets you watch two channels at the same time. As to whether we’re going to see a US-friendly version later on in the year—well, that’s not clear yet, but since the menu behind the dude is in dollars, perhaps the Koreans are making their press budget go a little further. MacBook Air hacked with internal EV-DO — finally lives up to its name

One of the most surprising things about the launch of an ultra-portable laptop dubbed “Air” by Apple wasn’t its thinness but the lack of an embedded WWAN radio. No more, at least if you’re not intimidated by smoldering solder and warranty violations. Jordan Bunnell has posted a step-by-step of his success at integrating a Verizon USB727 Aircard into the MacBook Air chassis thanks to the MBA’s previously unused USB controllers discovered on the system board. While the EVDO signal (and speed) has appreciably degraded from its externally attached origins, Jordan is still pulling 1,400 to 1,700kbps downloads and 380kbps uploads — something which might be improved with antenna tweaks. Regardless, those speeds are significantly faster than the 0kbps stock MBA owners experience.

Blockbuster announces new initiative, looks to game hardware sales

Just weeks after the rental giant announced an expanded dedication for Blu-ray and even tried selling HDTVs in a test location in Dallas, now the firm is attempting to boost profits by digging into the surging video game market. Presumably in hopes that rental junkies and casual gaming fans alike will actually venture into Blockbuster in order to buy their next Wii, DS, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, the outfit has announced a new focus that will push the retail video game / game hardware aspect in all of its US-based corporate-owned stores. This includes consoles, a more fleshed out array of games and all the accessories your wallet can handle. Heck, it’s even offering up an exclusive 40GB PS3 bundle ($499.99) with the Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray Disc, a PS3 remote, Transformers (the game) and a rental card giving purchasers a free PS3 game / BD rental per week for 12 weeks. Color us completely enthralled.

Verbatim’s new SmartDisk HDD is so small we could just eat it up

Because history has proven that hard drives must get smaller and more capacious, Verbatim went and released the 500GB 2.5-inch SmartDisk HDD. Despite claims from others, Verbatim says this marks the first available 9.5mm Z-height 2.5-inch hard disk. The drive is made up of three 166GB platters striped with Perpendicular Magnetic Recording at 5400RPM. With enclosure, it weighs in at less than 6 ounces and measures 3.38-inches by 5.38-inches by 0.63-inches in both USB and USB / FireWire combo versions. Expect it this summer for under $300.

AMD says post-Phenom CPUs will be "completely different," 100 laptops to launch with Puma

Although most of the attention in the increasingly-competitive CPU market has been focused on Intel and newcomer NVIDIA lately, AMD’s still in it to win it, and it looks like it’s taking some bold moves. First up, the company says over 100 laptop designs based on the new Puma mobile platform are being developed for delivery in June, over twice as many as it’s had in the past. AMD’s touting Puma’s Hybrid Graphics mode that allows the system to intelligently switch between a Radeon HD3400 and integrated graphics for max power-savings, so it’ll be interesting to see how the system stacks up against Intel’s Atom and VIA’s Isaiah — like NVIDIA, AMD seems to be betting that consumers care more about graphics than raw horsepower.

That bet might also explain why AMD’s technical director of sales and marketing Guiseppe Amato also recently told CustomPC that its next generation of chips will look “completely different” than Phenom, and that it will be capable of solving “problems that today we think can never be addressed by hardware.” That’s a pretty bold claim — the whole processor market is getting pretty boastful lately, have you noticed? — but we’re at a loss to explain what it means.
