Levi’s intros shiny new cellphones

Levi’s made its cellphone intentions pretty well known late last year, but it’s just now following through with them, trotting out its new line of self-branded phones made with more than a little help from ModeLabs. Unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot in the way of technical details at the moment, but Levi’s is more than willing to talk up the phone’s various style advantages, including its riveted steel casing and detachable chain. From the looks of it, you’ll also be able to get the phone in your choice of five color schemes, including metallic silver, black, brown copper, “shiny silver,” and “shiny sand” — the latter two of which also come with “mirror” screens. More details should be trickling out as we near the phone’s September launch date, which appears to be confined to Europe for the time being.

Porsche Design Mobile Group unveils P’9521 handhset

While the unlicensed version of Porsche’s mobile handset still holds a special place in our hearts, it looks like the Porsche Design Mobile Group finally took it upon themselves to join the growing fray and introduce its own co-branded device. The group has already slapped the luxurious logo on a sat nav device as well as a portable XM radio, but Stephane Bret (the group’s director) was caught showing off a new mobile in Essen. Unfortunately, details on the phone are all but nil, but we do know that the P’9521 was unveiled at the Red Dot Design Museum and will rock a squarish flip-phone design, integrated camera, and multimedia player. No word just yet on when (or if, actually) this sure-to-be-overpriced handset will hit store shelves, but we can’t help but notice that a few formidable opponents are quite a few laps ahead at this point. Small LCDs with integrated backlight sensor use 30% less juice

We seem to have been draining our phone batteries even faster than usual this week, so we find TPO’s power-saving display sensor tech to be pretty encouraging news for the future. The Taiwanese display manufacturer has figured out how to integrate ambient light sensors directly into a standard LCD screen, resulting in more accurate light readings than the usual external sensor setup. The system can also compensate for temperature with the addition of a black level sensor, which means the screen can detect light levels from 3 to 10,000 lux and adjust the backlight accordingly. The sensor tech is designed for small screens in mobile devices, and TPO estimates that the setup reduces overall power consumption around 30% under normal use, which would maybe let us get through a day without resorting to buying that enormous external battery pack we’ve been dreading. No word on when we’ll see these screens hit the consumer level, but TPO says mass production won’t start until 2008, so better keep that charger handy for a while.
